Pantoprazole is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) that reduces the production of stomach acid. It is used in both dogs and cats for the following conditions:
1. Treatment of Gastric and Duodenal Ulcers
- Helps in healing stomach ulcers caused by excess acid production.
- Protects the stomach lining from further damage.
2. Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD)
- Reduces acid reflux, preventing damage to the esophagus.
- Helps alleviate symptoms like regurgitation, vomiting, and discomfort.
3. Prevention and Management of NSAID-Induced Ulcers
- Commonly used when pets are on long-term non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like carprofen or meloxicam, which may cause stomach ulcers.
4. Management of Helicobacter Infections
- Used in combination with antibiotics to treat infections caused by Helicobacter bacteria, which can lead to ulcers.
5. Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome (Rare Condition)
- A rare condition where the stomach produces excessive acid due to tumors (gastrinomas).
- Pantoprazole helps control acid overproduction.
6. Prevention of Aspiration Pneumonia in Anesthesia Cases
- Sometimes used before surgery or anesthesia to reduce the risk of stomach acid entering the lungs (aspiration pneumonia).
- Dosage Guidelines:
- Dogs: The recommended dosage is 0.7–1 mg/kg, administered either orally or intravenously, once daily.
- Cats: Similarly, a dosage of 0.7–1 mg/kg, given orally or intravenously, once daily, is advised.
- Administration Considerations:
- Route: Pantoprazole can be administered orally or intravenously. Intramuscular (IM) and subcutaneous (SQ) routes are not recommended.
- Frequency: While once-daily dosing is standard, some cases may require administration every 12 hours, especially in hospitalized cats.
- Administration Timing: For optimal efficacy, pantoprazole should be given on an empty stomach.
Key Benefits:
Reduces stomach acid
Prevents and heals ulcers
Relieves acid reflux symptoms
Supports pets on NSAIDs
Always consult a veterinarian before administering pantoprazole, as dosage and treatment duration depend on the pet’s specific condition.
